The other-race effect and holistic processing across racial groups

چکیده
Abstract It is widely accepted that holistic processing important for face perception. However, it remains unclear whether the other-race effect (ORE) (i.e. superior recognition own-race faces) arises from reduced of faces. To address this issue, we adopted a cross-cultural design where Malaysian Chinese, African, European Caucasian and Australian participants performed four different tasks: (1) yes–no recognition, (2) composite, (3) whole-part (4) global–local tasks. Each task was completed with unfamiliar own- Results showed pronounced ORE in task. Both composite-face effects were found; however, these did not appear to be stronger faces than In task, Chinese African demonstrated global bias compared both European- Australian-Caucasian participants. Importantly, found little or no cross-task correlation between any measures ability. Overall, our findings cast doubt on prevailing account due Further studies should adopt an interactionist approach taking into cultural, motivational, socio-cognitive factors.

Holistic processing, contact, and the other-race effect in face recognition
Face recognition, holistic processing, and processing of configural and featural facial information are known to be influenced by face race, with better performance for own- than other-race faces. However, whether these various other-race effects (OREs) arise from the same underlying mechanisms or from different processes remains unclear. The present study addressed this question by measuring t...

The health effects of economic resources (eg, education, employment, and living place) and psychological assets (eg, self-efficacy, perceived control over life, anger control, and emotions) are well-known. This article summarizes the results of a growing body of evidence documenting Blacks’ diminished return, defined as a systematically smaller health gain from economic resources and psychologi...

متن کاملHolistic processing unites face parts across time
When complementary halves of different familiar faces are combined into a new face, there is interference in the identification of either half. This "composite face effect" has been taken as strong evidence that faces are processed holistically. Here, we demonstrate that this effect can persist when the two parts of a face are separated by up to 80 ms of visual noise, showing that the parts of ...
متن کاملHolistic Processing for Other-Race Faces in Chinese Participants Occurs for Upright but Not Inverted Faces
Recent evidence suggests stronger holistic processing for own-race faces may underlie the own-race advantage in face memory. In previous studies Caucasian participants have demonstrated larger holistic processing effects for Caucasian over Asian faces. However, Asian participants have consistently shown similar sized effects for both Asian and Caucasian faces. We investigated two proposed expla...
